Job Purpose & Position Overview: 
Will be responsible for the safe transportation of children, parents, and staff. The bus driver is responsible for vehicle maintenance and reporting, and willingness to continue one’s professional training in an effort to bring the highest of standards to the Head Start Program. 
 
Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values. 
  • Safely transport head start children, staff, chaperones and parents to and from planned head start activities. 
  • Mandatory reporter of all incidents of child abuse and neglect. 
  • Maintain open communication with children, parents and staff. 
  • Contributes to the Childs learning by actively communicating and interacting with all children at all times to promote language and literacy. 
  • Plan and implement regular bus evacuation drills and provide training. 
  • Know necessary protocols in transporting children with special needs. 
  • Complete monthly reporting and maintains fuel and servicing records. 
  • Clean bus and program vehicles on a regular basis. 
  • Supervises the loading and unloading of head start enrolled children along with the bus monitor. 
  • Attends all staff meetings, planning sessions, and other related workshops. 
  • Complete inspections on bus and all program vehicles on a regular basis. 
  • Must be flexible, a team planner and be positive role model for children, families and staff. 
  • Must be able to speak to the children on eye level. 
  • Will be knowledgeable of Head Start transportation and Performance Standards. 
  • Understands and adheres to the chain of command of Head Start Program and of the Tribal Organization. 
  • Handles confidential information with discretion concerning all children, families and head start related activities. 
  • Understands and adheres to the Policies and Procedures of the Winnebago Native American Head Start Program. 
  • Must present a positive image for Head Start in the community.

Required Qualifications/Skills: 
  • Valid Nebraska Driver’s license and good driving record. 
  • Must have a Federal Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger and school bus endorsement. 
  • Must be 21 years of age. 
  • Must be in good physical health free from communicable diseases. Will be required to take a physical examination and tuberculin test annually.  
  • Must be willing to attend training and continue education. 
  • Must obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days and keep valid. 
  • Submit to and pass required drug test. 
  • Submit to and pass required local, state, and federal background checks. 
Education Preference:  
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. is preferred. 
Training Requirements: 
  • Must be willing to attend meetings and trainings as requested. 
Physical Requirements: 
  • Normal to light office work which includes the ability to lift up to 10 lbs. 
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment. 
  • While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. 
Mental Requirements: 
  • Reading, writing, calculating 
  • Above average social interaction skills 
  • Reasoning/Analysis 
  • Ability to work as part of a team and/or with minimal to no supervision. 
Language Requirements: 
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently. 
  • Must be able to continually and effectively employ professional verbal and written communications skills. 
Certificates, Licenses & registrations: 
  • All applicants will comply with 45 CFR 1301, Subpart D, Section 1301.31, C and D, which require all prospective employees to sign a declaration prior to employment regarding all arrests and convictions of child abuse or violent felonies and to comply with PL 101-630 and PL 101-637 regarding criminal records check.
