Job Purpose & Position Overview 
The Prevention Specialist will provide intervention services for youth through an array of prevention and intervention activities under the Garret Lee Smith State/Tribal Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Grant. The Prevention Specialist will conduct individual and group dynamics, classes, presentations, one-on-one sessions with youth and family sessions that promote positive life choices and healthy living to all minor and first-time offenders referred from the Winnebago Juvenile Justice System. Will educate youth with the tools on how to cope with trauma or overcome the under-lying issues that make for risky behaviors. Conduct assessments, screening, classes and/or presentations that promote positive communication between parents and their children. Educate parents on trauma issues that youth are faced with on a day-to-day basis. Provide a Team Case Management Approach while maintaining case files and case performance on every client referred by the tribal prosecutor. Perform initial screening/assessments and community educational presentations. 
 
Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Assists with initial screening/assessment process upon referral.
  • Meets with family to explain the program responsibilities.
  • Meets with youth, family, and Case Management Team to develop a Service Plan; 
  • Conducts/presentations that promote positive life skills, drug and alcohol prevention, anger management, healthy relationships (Ho-Chunk Family Values), suicide prevention and effectively dealing with trauma, higher education, goal setting, self-pride, respect, bullying/violence prevention, truancy, parenting and all other preventative informational//educational classes pertaining to youth development;
  • Ability to serve the Winnebago community's at-risk youth and program participants in a culturally sensitive and age appropriate manner;
  • Develops presentations for clients and their families to learn in either a one-on-one or a family educational setting based on evidence-based approach (TF-CBT - trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy);
  • Promote positive ongoing cultural competency, must relate to the gender and cultural needs of participants;
  • Assures and maintains confidentiality of all program participants' information;
  • Maintain logs and all documentation pertaining to participant case files;
  • Gathers and prepares materials for educational sessions and presentations and to develop or add to curriculums and toolboxes;
  • Stays current with social media, news, music, cyber correspondence as it is available for youth to better understand the situations that youth encounter and to circulate program information to the community
  •  Maintains a log of session evaluations upon the completion of every session performed.
Required Qualifications/Skills:
  •  Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  •  2 years direct service experience within a youth-serving program or agency.
  •  Must pass background checks.
  •  Familiar with Ho-Chunk culture and community resources.
  •  Quality people skills, especially appropriate for youth
  •  Positive role model and group facilitation skills.
  •  Possess strong public speaking skills
  •  Creative thinking, youth outreach and education delivery.
 Training Requirements:
  •  Must be willing to attend meetings and trainings as requested.
 Conditions of employment:
  •  This position is grant funded and NOT guaranteed passed January 14th 2025.
Physical Requirements:
  •  Normal to very heavy office work which includes the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  •  Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment.
  • While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Manual dexterity with cooperatively free range of motion of all extremities including neck, finger, hands, wrists, elbows, arms, shoulders, waist, legs, hips, knee joints, ankles, and feet is required.
  • YCIC employees may be subject to physical exertion involving standing, walking, and running which could requires sustained and considerable strength and endurance.

 Language Requirements:
  •  Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.

  • All applicants will comply with 45 CFR 1301, Subpart D, Section 1301.31, C and D, which require all prospective employees to sign a declaration prior to employment regarding all arrests and convictions of child abuse or violent felonies and to comply with PL 101-630 and PL 101-637 regarding criminal records check.
