Fuels Crew Member (Fire Fighter Type 2)

Salary (Grade): $58,240.00/yr

Job Purpose & Position Overview: 
Under the supervision of the Lead conservation officer, the FFT2 will engage in prescribed fire activities associated with the treatment units on the Winnebago reservation. This work will involve long hours in steep terrain under extreme weather along with field operations involving pile burning and broadcast burns that will expose them to moderate amounts of smoke during their employment. 

Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values. 
  • Engages in field fire treatment efforts including but not limited to: pile burning and broadcast burns following a mechanical treatment and burn plan; and lop and pile activities. 
  • A BIA agency prepared mechanical treatment and burn plan will outline in depth specific areas of operations and work assignment. 
  • Ensures own safety in all aspects of assignment. 
  • Cut and remove brush, small trees, and other vegetation using chainsaws, wee-eaters, trimmers, handsaws, pole saws, rakes, McLeod’s Pulaski’s, pruning shears, broom pullers, shovels, walk behind mowers etc. to reduce hazardous wildland fuels and create a fuel break; 
  • Operate wood chipper machine to chip small trees and other vegetation and spread chips with hand tools; 
  • Assist to prepare control lines and serve as holding crew during controlled burn and mop up hot spots utilizing backpack pumps, chainsaws and/or other hand tools to effectively control prescribed burns; may include overseeing control burns or assisting with the control burns. 
  • Apply herbicides to help control undesirable vegetation, using backpack or had held sprayer; 
  • Lay out and stake erosion control fiber rolls, blankets, and netting; 
  • Spread straw, plant small trees, shrubs, and spread grass seed to help restore sites after vegetation removal; 
  • Cut fire line, mop up hot spots and support hose lays by using chainsaws and/or other hand tools to assist with wildland fire suppression may include overseeing control burns or assisting with the control burns. 
  • Drive crew carries or other tribal vehicle to transport Fuels crew members and tow portable toilet to work sites; 
  • Monitor fire weather conditions using hand held kestrel weather kit. 
  • Communicate with the Tribe’s emergency dispatch center via hand held radio or vehicle radio to report daily work site location or to report emergencies. 
  • Inspect, clean and repair chainsaws and other tools and equipment; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

 Required Qualifications/Skills: 
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED 
Training Requirements: 
  • A work capacity test will be administered to all FFT2 personnel involved in field operations along with a mandatory physical that is required for all new personnel. This physical will need to be retaken every three years. Standards for work capacity test ratings for an arduous level position is a 3 mile walk carrying 45 pounds completed in 45 minutes or less. 
  • The successful candidate will have six months to complete the following training through the National Wildfire Coordinating Group to become certified as a FFT2: 
            o   Basic Firefighter Training: 
                       §  Introduction to ICS (ICS-100) 
                       §  Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service (L-180) 
                       §  Firefighter training (S-180) 
                      §  Introduction to Wildland Fire behaviors (S-190) 
           o   National Incident Management System: An Introduction (IS-700) 
           o   Wildland Fire Safety Training Annual Refresher (if not first year as a FFT2) (RT-180) 
           o   Knowledge of National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) guidelines set for in the Wildland Fire        Qualification System Guide (PMS 310-1) 

  • Wildland Fire Safety Training Annual Refresher (annually) 
 Physical Requirements: 
  • Arduous 
  • Duties involve fieldwork requiring physical performance calling for above-average endurance and superior conditioning. These duties may include an occasional demand for extraordinarily strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Requirements include running, walking, climbing, jumping, twisting, bending, and lifting more than 50 pounds. The pace of work typically is set by the emergency situation.  ‘ 
  • Employees must have 8-inch-high work boots with lug soles prior to starting field operations.

 Language Requirements: 
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently. 
  • Must be able to continually and effectively employ professional verbal and written communications skills
